Just as "AYO" and "Dancin' In Circles" were waiting ever so patiently for their turn to shine, Lady Gaga has gone and commissioned a brand new, non-album single to radio.
Merely six months after the release of her country/rock/pop experiment Joanne, which saw the release of lead single "Perfect Illusion" and chart success "Million Reasons", pop queen Lady Gaga has unexpectedly dropped dancehall/EDM-influenced "The Cure" during her Saturday headlining duties at Coachella. Straightforward pop with possible inspiration from The Chainsmokers, the new track steers the artist back towards radio-dominating territory with soft, sultry vocals, yet another exceptional hook and endearing, relateable songwriting detailing devotion and love.
"The Cure" is another direction switch for Lady Gaga, but this time taking the pop chameleon back to her roots. However, not just back to her roots from the critically-acclaimed era of The Fame. The new effort sounds to be a throwback to unreleased, R&B-leaning material such as "Second Time Around" and "No Way". While strongly supported by an infectious, electronic-heavy beat, especially on the chorus, it's Lady Gaga's vocals that do much of the work for the surprise release.
After experiencing some relationship turmoil throughout her previous single releases, Lady Gaga seems to have found someone to reignite her romantic flame. Infatuated to the point of complete obedience, the artist sings of caring for her man for better or worse, through sickness and health. "I wrote you this lullaby, hush now baby, don't you cry, anything you want could not be wrong," she smoothly belts on the track's second verse, before the commanding chorus takes control.
Supposedly recorded in March, the overall vibe of "The Cure" fits in perfectly with the laidback, joyous atmosphere a festival such as Coachella works to embody. The production could be compared to current trends, but the sincere, rough-around-the-edges feel stays true to old Gaga demos and her attention to a singer/songwriter approach carried to thrilling heights with the right pop hook. No word as to whether the surprise single is from an upcoming re-release or brand new album, either way, Gaga has millions screaming with enthusiasm.
Near perfect, the bridge was a tad underwhelming and could have used an extra dose of spoken word, hope and happiness appear to be back in Lady Gaga's life as "The Cure" shines brightly as a plea for commitment. In addition to featuring a vocal performance filled to the brim with radiating cheer, the musical direction recalls the days of a struggling artist working to make it big. The lyrics come off as honest revelations, the feel of simplicity is effortlessly delivered and Lady Gaga sounds to be driving to the recording studio with a smile on her face again. Well done!
