Heartthrob Blake McGrath Heats Up Valentine's Day!

Canadian heartthrob/ex So You Think You Can Dance contestant Blake McGrath is currently hard at work prepping his sophomore album, a follow up to his overlooked debut Time To Move in 2010. The new album currently has a tentative release date of summer 2013 and, besides the release of buzz single "Motion Picture", not much was known about the new project entitled Love Revolution... until now. For Valentine's Day McGrath made his devoted female, and male, fans melt with the release of not one, but two, brand new singles as their gift. While one showcases sounds and influences found on his debut record, the other has McGrath moving into a new territory with his music: the R&B genre. Both are great listens, but one obviously outshines the other.

The first, "When Love Shows Up", is set to appear on the new album as only a bonus track, but McGrath should really rethink the track list and have this breathtaking song show up on every standard edition. With a fast-paced, electronic supporting beat, McGrath seductively sings about not knowing what to do when love shows up right in front of him. "Life's too short so let's make it last", the artist croons with vocals that have improved greatly since he started his music career. The new song is hot, I can hear it playing on the radio today with its Usher influences, and a music video featuring intricate choreography is the only thing playing through my mind as I listen. McGrath's debut album had some gems sprinkled throughout, notably "Relax" and "The Night", but this cut surpasses them both.

McGrath has been experimenting with other genres and sounds during the recording process for the new album and "Danja" has been lined up as one of the two lead singles from the album, targeted towards R&B/urban radio stations. Featuring Duke Gutta, a rapper I am not too familiar with at the moment, the song carries an entirely different vibe than the other new single. McGrath's vocals are lower, more soulful, while chaotic production plays in the background. The song is good, but I do not know if it is the right choice for a lead single. McGrath's vocal performance is sexy and amazing, reminding me of Justin Timberlake at times, but Gutta's rap steals the spotlight and the rest is just not as attention-getting as "When Love Shows Up". It makes me want to dance, it is something new and unique, but McGrath gets lost at times.

"Danja" and "When Love Shows Up" could both be singles, used to attract a different type of audience, but "When Love Shows Up" is the stronger cut in my opinion. The songs are great dance creations, features some improved vocals and well-written lyrics. Compared to the material found on his debut, these Valentine's Day gift represent the growth of an artist. It now feels McGrath is taking his recording career seriously and it is getting me excited for Love Revolution. Both songs are currently available for free and the singer has also mentioned "Glow in the Dark" as the lead pop single, which hopefully gets a release date very soon. What do you think of "When Love Shows Up" and "Danja"? Which track would you listen to more than once?
