The Fly (1958)

Oh my god this one was creepy. I'm the kind of girl who had to sleep in her parent's bedroom after watching "The sixth sense", but "The Fly" was the scariest movie I've ever seen. Kind of.

The audience goes: "Oh no, what in the world is under that hood??". Oh, the movie is in color, but I couldn't find a good pic.
David Hedison and Patricia Owens (hadn't heard about them before) play Andre and Helene, a married couple. He's a scientist putting the final touches to his revolutionary system of teletransportation and she's his (annoyingly stupid) wife. Oh, they have a kid who loves catching flies.
So, uhm, while Andre practices with his machine teleportating plates, cats and guinea pigs, Helene watches perfectly dressed and give some words of concern to her husband. The way the machine works is really cool, has some neon lights, tons of buttons and two chambers. Oh, and you have to wear some huge sunglasses. Everything is working fine (kind of, wait to see what happens with the cat) until the day Andre decides to work the whole day alone.
The movie is very well structured. When your title is "The fly" you don't need to have very pompous tension moments or some creepy music at the end of every scene anticipating something really scary to the public. No, you just make it simple and tell the story right away. And you don't need tremendously super duper special effects to frighten the audience, let their minds work. A black hood covering the scientist head, one of his hands in his pocket all the time, his inability to talk and the fact that a white headed fly is around will do. Really, they will imagine the worst things by themselves. It's very effective, especially when Helene acts stupidly near him, asking questions and not rising to the occasion.
And the final part, oh my. You haven't seen such a creepy thing before. That voice screaming "help me!" will be in your head for days and days.
