More Figures from the Painting Table

Foundry 28mm Renaissance Italian Wars Pike
Here is another unit recently completed.  This is a sixteen figure Renaissance Pike unit.  The figures are from the Foundry Italian Wars range.  The style of dress suggests they are from the late Italian Wars period, 1515 to 1526.  The flags are those of the city state of Venice.

The figures are mounted on two bases, each measuring 3 inches by 2 inches.  This is not the traditional Field of Battle 2 ("FOB2") basing.  FOB2 recommends 4 equal sized bases to reflect the 4 Unit Integrity hits each unit can take before routing.

Also, four bases allows easy representation of line, column, assault column and square.  However, all formations can be represented by two bases.  Play can be speeded up by having fewer bases so I have decided to go with only 2 bases for each unit.  The frontage is the same.

FOB2 does not have an official Renaissance version.  However, James Roach has authored a version of classic Piquet for Ancients and he has been working on a set for the Renaissance period. His blog can be accessed here:  LINK

The bases are metal and can be stuck to a storage box lined with sheet magnets.  The rocks were made using Woodland scenics medium ballast attached with watered down white glue.  The bases were then painted brown with Craft Smart Brown (in the 8 oz bottle).  The rocks are then dry brushed with Folkart Yellow Ochre and highlighted with Delta Ceramcoat Antique White.

The flocking is a mix of Woodland Scenics Harvest Gold Static Grass Flock, Green Blend Blended Turf, Wild Honey Static Grass Flock and some others.

The pike were made with medium gauge florists wire, painted with English Mustard brown and GW Boltgun silver.

Painting and finishing this unit has been very satisfying.  By limiting my primary color palette to four colors -Yellow, Blue, Brown and Green - I was able to complete the unit relatively quickly and avoid Renaissance color burnout.
